MALACCA: Two men assaulted a policeman while ramming into another following a scuffle that took place after a high-speed chase along the Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Alor Gajah (SPA) Highway near Bertam Indah here.
In the 10.30am incident on Thursday, two policemen on motorcycles flagged the two men - aged 33 and 27 - down while they were patrolling the stretch.
Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst. Comm Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah (pic) said the men acted in a suspicious manner that prompted his officers to intercept them and direct them to pull over.
"However, the 27-year-old driver sped-off triggering a high-speed chase. During the drama, the driver rammed into one of my men before reinforcements arrived at the scene," he said.
ACP Shaikh said that the 27-year old was a civil servant and added that one of the men then got out of the car and began to assault the other policeman who was trying to arrest them.
He added that both men were ultimately overpowered and arrested by the police, who also confiscated 60 Eramin 5 pills and 30gm of syabu with a total street value of RM11,000.
Urine tests performed after the arrest found that both men tested positive for methamphetamine use.
The duo have since been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39A(2) and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for assaulting law enforcement officers.
