Police detain 2 Illegal Race Organisers usually held at Kesas

Kesas illegal race organisers caught

SHAH ALAM: Using 'Wechat' application on weekends, illegal race organisers lure 'rempit' racers to participate in illegal races on the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) for the past few months.
The organisers collected a participation fee of only RM60 for each racer and this was later used as the prize money for the illegal race captured in a video that went viral on social media last month.
However, their activity ended when police detained them at midnight on Oct 17 following intelligence work by a special team from the Shah Alam district police headquarters.
Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Shafien Mamat said the two men, who are in their 20s were arrested at 12.30am in Shah Alam and Klang.
"Following our interrogation, the duo was discovered to be the organisers of the illegal race on Kesas Highway.
"They promoted the race via Wechat application and charged a participation fee of RM60 and the money would be given to the winner," he said when met after launching the Petaling district Unity Squad at Section 24, here, last night.
Shafien said the case was the first of its kind for the district and the investigation papers have been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
"The suspects have been released on police bail and the case is investigated according to Sections 42 and 81(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for promoting a race which has not been approved," he said.
The duo are facing a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both if convicted.
On Sept 22, a footage of the illegal race which showed at least four racers falling from their bikes after an accident with a Proton Exora went viral on social media.
The organisers then went to extremes to clean up the accident scene to avoid detection by authorities.
Kesas highway patrol was bewildered to see the accident scene devoid of any trace when they went to check on a report notifying them about the accident.
One rider was warded at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in Klang for a broken leg while the rest suffered light injuries.
