Ku Li shrugs off claims of betrayal for appearing with Dr Mahathir
The Malaysian Insider – 8 hours ago
Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has dismissed claims that he betrayed Umno by appearing in a press conference with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently.
"Who's betraying the party?" the veteran lawmaker, known as Ku Li, said when asked by reporters outside Dewan Rakyat today.
Ku Li, despite being long considered a nemesis of Dr Mahathir, appeared in a press conference to condemn the arrests of Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and lawyer Matthias Chang under the Security Offences (Special Measures Act) 2012 (Sosma) following their criticism of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
He said his appearance in the press conference was strictly to condemn the use of Sosma.
"I appeared not because of any other matter but only about the restriction of freedom of movement.
"We supported the repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the same spirit."
He said Sosma, when tabled in Parliament, was assured not to be used to restrict freedom but strictly for terrorists.
He also said the current society was an "open society" and it could not be expected for any communication to be confined in closed forums alone. – October 26, 2015.
