National hero Fong Thean Kit dies

GEORGE TOWN: National hero police Corporal (Rtd) Fong Thean Kit passed away early Tuesday. He was 76.
He succumbed to lung cancer and was cremated at the Batu Gantung Crematorium today.
Fong leaves behind two sons and a daughter.
Fong's wife, Khaw Pek Heok, passed away two years ago. She was in her late 60s.
Fong is widely known for his bravery in arresting a criminal on the wanted list, despite being shot at Setapak, Kuala Lumpur in 1971.
He was awarded the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa award by the Yang diPertuan Agong in 1997, four years after he retired from the police force.
He was one of the seven recipients of the country’s highest gallantry award, the SPGP.
The award is the highest Federal honour bestowed on a person, higher than those awarded to royalty.
