PETALING JAYA: For one boy in blue, a stern demeanour comes hand-in-hand with the dulcet tones of a ballad-worthy voice.
Word on the street is that city police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa (pic) was spotted in a mini-concert with buskers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
In a clip on the Video Viral Facebook page, a guitarist in the street band made a special request to Tajuddin to sing for onlookers in front of the Sogo shopping mall.
He is seen handing the law enforcer a pink catalogue, before starting to strum the first strains of the P. Ramlee classic Dara Pujaan.
To the delight of many onlookers, the smartly-uniformed Tajuddin grinned, stepped up to the mic and delivered the number with melodious ease, smiling and swaying slightly from side to side all the while.
The appreciative audience whipped out their mobile devices to record the rare scene, prompting Tajuddin to quip "tapi jangan viral kan sudah" (but just don't viral this) after the end of the song, which was met with laughter.
On the Facebook page, Malaysians voiced their appreciation for the "sporting" gesture by a member of the police, with Ramadhan Aidiladha praising the quality of Tajuddin's voice.
Fariz Mohd commended his participation in the street as it showed the communal spirit of the police, while Atok Nahar summed it up best with "terbaik" (the best).
When contacted, a bashful Tajuddin said that they came across the buskers during a walkabout around Sogo organised by Celcom and the city traffic police a few days before the Hari Raya celebrations.
He told The Star that he stepped up to the microphone after much coaxing from Celcom Axiata chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly who was playing drums for the entire song.
"Datuk Seri Shazalli 'forced' me to take the mic, because he wanted to play the drums. It was very spontaneous.
"When the video went viral, I texted him to ask how we should deal with this!" said Tajuddin with a chuckle.
Tajuddin said that it was tradition for him to break fast with city traffic police a few times during the fasting month.
"During this walkabout, we broke fast near Sogo," he related.
When asked what he thought of netizens complimenting him for being a good sport, Tajuddin chortled and said that it made him "very shy".
"I really don't know how to react to compliments. I don't know what to say," said Tajuddin.
