THE STAR
GEORGE TOWN: A family outing at a shopping mall in the heart of the city turned scary when a toddler got his fingers stuck in an escalator.
The boy, three-year-old Ng Juen Shen, was taking the escalator down to the ground floor with his parents when he sat down on the steps and rested his hands by his side, which then got stuck in a gap.
A security guard on duty immediately hit the emergency stop button upon hearing the boy’s father Wei Kang, 30, shouting for help.
The boy’s ordeal, however, was not over as his hand was stuck for some 10 minutes before Fire and Rescue Department personnel and mall staff managed to free it.
The skin on his hand was ripped off right up to the wrist, however, an X-ray revealed that there were no broken bones or fractures.
Wei Kang, a technician who resides in Permatang Pauh, said he had initially planned to take his family to the shopping mall before heading to Esplanade to catch an exhibition.
He said he had been looking after his youngest son Juen Xuan, two, while on the escalator and that his wife was watching after Juen Shen.
