KUALA LUMPUR: A customer courteously and coolly waited in line behind a man who was pointing a 24cm-long knife at a petrol station counter employee in one hand and scooping cash from a cash register with the other.
After the robber left, the woman paid for her items and exited while the traumatised cashier stood in shock.
But the 26-year-old robber did not get very far when Ampang Jaya police tracked him down and arrested him within hours of the crime.
Revealing closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage to reporters, Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Khairuldin Saad said the petrol station in Tasek Permai was packed with customers on Wednesday when the man walked in and placed his knife on the counter at about 4.30pm.
He told the woman at the counter to be quiet and held the knife near her. The man then took RM2,876 from the cash register before walking out of the shop.
But what was more surprising was the behaviour of the customers, who mostly folded their hands and watched as the robbery took place.
In the CCTV footage, police said a woman who was standing behind the robber went on to pay for her purchases as if nothing had happened.
“You can’t blame her because she was probably scared too. You have to be practical in such a situation. The man was armed and not many people want to take risks,” added ACP Khairuldin.
Police, however, managed to identify the robber and arrested him when he was about to get into his car in Taman Tasek Tambahan.
He said the man tested positive for drugs and would be charged with armed robbery
