SHAH ALAM: The forced removal of a cross from a church in Taman Medan is unacceptable and disrespectful to Christians, said Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali(pic).
“The cross is a sacred symbol for the Christian community.
“To force them to remove the symbol is certainly unacceptable and disrespectful to the Christian community,” Azmin told reporters after attending a monthly gathering of the state's civil servants on Monday.
A group of about 50 demonstrators had gathered outside a church in Taman Medan on Sunday to protest against a cross on the church’s building.
They had demanded for the cross to be taken down, claiming that it challenged Islam.
Some protesters also said that the existence of a church in the vicinity was an affront to their faith.
It is understood that the cross was taken down by church authorities several hours later.
The church was conducting Sunday service when the protesters gathered outside.
