The Selangor government will soon set up a 4G telecommunications system in the state that will provide residents access to free wireless Internet (Wi-Fi).
The technology will be based on the Optical Distribution Antenna System (Odas), said Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in his summary of the State Budget Dialogue 2015 at the Shah Alam Convention Centre.
He said the state government was now tweaking the working paper and would present the plans to the Members of Parliament and state assemblymen soon.
"We will soon invite them and other parties involved to listen to the state government's briefing of the plans.
“The working paper is complete but we need a little time to finish setting it up before the system can be implemented," Khalid (pic) was quoted as saying by Selangorkini.
He said the policy would provide the public with free Wi-Fi while generating income for the state government through renting out telecommunication structures.
"If it is implemented, it would give free Wi-Fi services to all of the rakyat in Selangor, including closed circuit television (CCTV)," said Khalid.
Science and Technology executive council member Dr Daroyah Alwi predicted that the state government would rake in billions of ringgit from the project in the next seven years.
He said that state authorities and mosques would generate income from renting out the structures.
"Moving the structures from the rooftops to the lamp posts will change the landscape of the Wifi network in this state," he said in his summary.
"As landowners, the state government must seize this opportunity to generate income by renting out the telecommunication structures that we suggested to the telco firms."
