KUALA LUMPUR: Member of Parliament for Muar, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was sentenced to seven years in prison with two lashes, as well as a fine of RM10 million after being found guilty of breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering.
This follows a decision made by High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid who said that the defense failed to raise reasonable doubts about the prosecution's case.
For the first charge, he is accused of conspiring to commit a breach of trust amounting to RM1 million in funds belonging to Angkatan Muda Bersatu (Armada) wing in March 2020.
For this charge, Syed Saddiq was ordered to serve a prison sentence of three years and one whipping.
For the charge of misusing RM120,000 in party donations belonging to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise, he was sentenced to two years in prison and one stroke.
For two charges of being involved in money laundering activities involving two transactions of RM50,000 each, he was sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of RM5 million, which will run concurrently.
The court also ordered the accused to serve an additional prison term of four years if he fails to pay the fine.
The judge allowed Syed Saddiq's request to suspend the prison sentence pending an appeal and ordered the bail conditions to be maintained.
