KUALA LUMPUR: National wushu athlete Wong Weng Son won the men's Changquan event at the 2023 World Wushu Championships held in Texas, United States (US) on Saturday.

The 31-year-old athlete was crowned world champion after gaining 9,826 points to edge out his challenger from Indonesia Seraf Naro Siregar (9,803 points) who took the silver and bronze from compatriot Clement Ting Su Wei (9,800 points).

The championship won by the athlete born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan at once cured his disappointment of only winning silver in the same event in the 2019 edition in Shanghai, China.

The last time Weng Son won gold at the world championships was in 2017 in Kazan, Russia for the Jianshu event.

Even sweeter the success of the national camp did not stop there when Su Wei also contributed a silver medal for the men's Daoshu event.

The national women's wushu camp also produced two silvers through Sydney Chin Sy Xuan in the Taijijian event and Loh Ying Ting for the women's Changquan competition.

Former world champion, Tan Cheong Min won bronze in the women's Nangun event.
