BAGAN SERAI, July 9 -- By selling cheap compared to its generally exorbitant prices currently, three tonnes of durian were sold out within an hour each day in Persiaran Raja Syed Thauphy 4, here, after the fruit sale went viral recently.

Durian seller Mohd Shukri Omcek, 27, said he did not expect the video of his durian sale at RM1.99 per kilogramme which he uploaded onto the social media platforms recently would have people thronging a roadside spot where he has been selling the ‘King of Fruits’.

He said he initiated selling of the fruit at a low price after reading the online complaints from netizens on the high price of durian which only the well-off and privileged could afford.

“The fruit could be so expensive in the market that it is beyond the means of the B40 group to buy it and enjoy with the family.

“Because of this, a friend and I go looking for durian farmers around Bukit Gantang and Trong and offering them wholesale prices that would enable us to sell the fruit to the public at a low price,” he said when met here today.

Mohd Shukri said he had been selling durian at the low price since a week ago and the public response was very encouraging with many customers arriving at the roadside spot even before the lorry transporting the fruit arrived.

A customer, Zainudin Hamid 48, said he got to know about the cheap durian sale through social media which gave the low-income earners the opportunity to enjoy the delectable fruit.

He said during the COVID-19 pandemic, the income of many people had been adversely affected and thus could not afford the fruit if sold at a high price.

"The attitude of durian sellers who offer the fruit at an affordable price so that the general public could savour it is praiseworthy,” he added.
