Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing passed away at age 75

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing, the founder of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, has passed away at the age of 75.

The cause of his death is still unknown but last week, it was reported that he was hospitalised after a fall and was in stable condition.


The university confirmed his death in a statement on Tuesday (June 1).

The exact cause of his death is still a matter of speculation, although the university on May 25 said Lim suffered a fall at home recently.

The statement was issued to address rumours of his death at the time, supposedly due to Covid-19.

Official statements from his family and the university on his death today are expected soon.

Recently, there was rumors which said Lim Kok Wing died in Pantai Hospital Bangsar, following a bout of Covid-19 that landed him in the ICU.

A press release issued by Limkokwing University notes that he is merely recuperating in hospital after a fall in his house.

The press release was signed by Vice-President of Limkokwing University, Datuk Gail Phung, who also expressed that Lim Kok Wing should be given complete privacy to rest and recuperate.


Lim, who founded LUCT in 1991, is recognised as a pioneer of innovation in creative education in Malaysia.

Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing received over 730 awards, honours and recognitions from industries, governments and civil society groups across five continents in his lifetime, says LUCT.

Among others, the philanthropist played an instrumental role in bringing new legislation to improve and broaden tertiary education in the country, and was heavily involved in the drafting of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996.

In 2002, LUCT became one of the first private institutions in the country to be recognised as a university college, and attained full-fledged university status in 2007.
