Dubai: Malaysia took all three points in a 1-0 win over Thailand thanks to a Safawi Rasid penalty in the second half in Group G of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on Tuesday.
The result saw Malaysia leapfrog Thailand into third place as the group concluded with Thailand going down a place to fourth. UAE emerged the group winners with a thrilling 3-2 win over Vietnam, with both teams advancing to the final round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Malaysia and Thailand advance to the final round of the Qualifiers for the AFC Asian Cup China 2023.
The two sides had gone into this game on the back of a winless run stretching back to 2019, and having been knocked out of the reckoning for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualification, this match carried the importance of confirming third place for the winners.
Muhammed Akhyar took the first big chance of the game for Malaysia, when he pounced on a poorly cleared ball by Thailand goalkeeper Chatchai Budprom, and dribbled into the area under pressure from the defence and took a shot from a tight angle that was blocked, eventually winning a corner.
Another chance fell to Malaysia midway through the first period when Nor Azam sent in the ball from a set-piece, which fell to Brendan Gan who headed straight at Budprom.
Seven minutes into the second half, Thailand conceded a penalty when Ernesto fouled Safawi in the area, with the latter converting from the spot with a low shot that Budprom appeared to have held, but the ball crept below him and into the net.
