TUMPAT, Sept 15 -- The Kelantan police seized 584 kilogrammes (kg) of syabu with an estimated value of RM23.3 million found in a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle abandoned in a forest area near Cherang Melintang here on Sept 12.

Kelantan police chief DCP Shafien Mamat said, earlier that day, the 4WD and a Proton Satria Neo car were involved in a pursuit by the Malaysian Border Security Agency (AKSEM) patrol team.

Elaborating further, he said the AKSEM team was patrolling in Telok Jering here at 6.15pm when they came across the 4WD which was being driven in a suspicious manner.

“Realising the presence of AKSEM, the driver of the vehicle sped off to escape and at the same time a Proton Satria Neo appeared, trying to obstruct the agency’s vehicle.

“An AKSEM personnel fired a warning shot into the air, but the vehicles gave them a slip and got away,” he told reporters at Tumpat district police headquarters here, today.

Shafien said, following the incident, the AKSEM team mounted checks in several areas and managed to track down the four-wheel-drive at 7 pm after receiving information regarding an abandoned vehicle.

He said the 4WD was locked and upon inspection the police found drugs believed to be syabu weighing 584kg contained in several sacks inside the vehicle.

Initial investigations revealed that the owner of the 4WD has a Perak address, however the Proton Satria Neo did not have a licence plate, he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants from carrying their duties.

He urged the public who have information relating to the case to contact the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department at 012-2087222.
