Bukit Aman: Large-scale terrorist attack foiled last February, two Malaysians among 10 nabbed

KUALA LUMPUR: A large-scale international attack by al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) was averted last February after swift action by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division.
Special Branch deputy director (II) Comm Datuk Cheong Koon Kock said in the operations, 10 individuals including two Malaysians were arrested.
"Intelligence gathered revealed that al-Qaeda and IS members had plans to set up a terror cell here.
"Following the arrests, we shared information with foreign intelligence agencies and managed to thwart a large-scale international attack," he told reporters at Bukit Aman on Monday (Jan 13).
He said last year, police also seized six improvised explosive devices and 15 bullets which were meant to be used by terrorist groups to attack places of worship following the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.
"Through ongoing efforts, the Special Branch also succeeded in arresting 72 suspects including 26 locals on suspicion of involvement in terror activities.
"We were also involved in operations to eradicate smuggling in four states - Kedah, Pahang, Perak and Negri Sembilan," he said.
"The operations also saw police seized items worth RM3mil.
"We also cooperated with the police's Anti-Money Laundering Crime Investigation Team and managed to seize RM5mil worth of items linked to wildlife smuggling and hunting activities," he added.
