PETALING JAYA: Prominent lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla has been appointed as chairman for the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda), said Rural and Regional Development Minister Rina Harun tonight.

In other appointments, she said PPBM Supreme Council member Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi will lead Mara Corporation Sdn Bhd.

Former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) deputy vice-chancellor Sukiman Sarmani will lead Universiti Teknikal Mara (UniTEK-Mara) as its chairman.

Rina did not specify when these appointments come into effect and their duration.

Rina said she recommended the three names to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who then gave his approval.

Haniff graduated from the London School of Economics and has been a lawyer for 27 years.

Sukiman hails from the University of Reading and UKM. He is a chemistry and nuclear science specialist.

Akhramsyah, who is the son of former Cabinet minister Sanusi Junid, is a chemical engineer by profession.
