CHUKAI: A police officer has shot dead a man believed to be a hired killer in a shootout at Felda Neram 1, here.

Kemaman district police chief Superintendent Mohd Said Ibrahim said the incident occurred at around 4.30am this morning at a construction site here.

He said that earlier, a police officer, who was doing his rounds, noticed the man behaving suspiciously at the site.

The suspect, in his 30s, was shocked to see the officer before he started firing a few shots. The officer retaliated, hitting the suspect on his head and right chest,” he said, adding that a semi-automatic handgun with one bullet left was found near the suspect’s body.

“The suspect was believed to be wanted by the police for his involvement in a few criminal cases including murder in Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang. Further investigations are still ongoing,” he said.

The body had been sent to the forensic unit of the Kemaman Hospital for a post-mortem.
