KUALA LUMPUR: The government has tightened security against terrorism for the upcoming 29th Sea Games.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said under a directive by the National Security Council, a mechanism on crisis management had been established.

“It comprised the Crisis Control Committee (CCC) chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government, Crisis Management Team (CMT) chaired by the police's Internal Security and Public Order Department director and the Crisis Management Team chaired by Brigade Commander,” he said in a statement today.

Zahid said in order to further enhance readiness, the police had been collaborating with related government agencies to hold a series of Tabletop Exercise (2017 Ex-Rimau) in Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Langkawi, Kuala Terengganu and several location in Kuala Lumpur.

He said in April 2017, the government set up a High Level Committee (HLC) for the Sea Games which is branded as Kuala Lumpur 2017 (KL2017).

Chaired by Zahid, who is also Home Minister, the HLC formed a KL2017 Anti-terrorism Task Force which is helmed by the police with assistance from the armed forces.

The task force will respond to any terror attacks during KL2017 which will see athletes from 10 Asean countries competing in 405 events and 38 sports.

At the same time, he called for the public cooperation with security forces, saying that it would be vital in dealing with terror attacks.

“The prime objective in crisis management is to solve the crisis as fast as possible in order to save lives and properties.

“It is absolutely vital to prevent a crisis from happening within a crisis,” he said.
