KUALA NERUS: The new Inspector-General of Police replacing Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar will be announced on Sept 4 after a Police Force Commission meeting the same day, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, also urged the public to refrain from speculating on who would be Khalid’s successor.

“We have offered him (Khalid) extension but he declined. We have to respect his decision to retire. The Police Force Commission will meet on Sept 4 to decide on his successor and I will make the announcement.

“The prime minister will seek an audience with the Yang Di Pertuan Agong first to obtain the ruler’s consent,” he said.

Zahid also thanked Khalid for his 40 years of dedicated and excellent service in the police force.

“He was responsible for the transformation of the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

“He was also responsible for the 47 per cent reduction in the crime index,” he told reporters after opening the Kuala Nerus Umno divisional meeting here today.
