KUALA LUMPUR: The United States embassy in Malaysia has released a short online video congratulating Malaysia on its 60th year of independence today.

The 82-second video uploaded to the embassy’s “usembassykl” Youtube channel features US ambassador to Malaysia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir extending her congratulations to Malaysia.

“On behalf of the people of the United States, it gives me tremendous pleasure to congratulate the people of Malaysia (on its) 60 years of Independence.

“2017 also marked the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between the US and Malaysia. We are proud to embrace an independent Malaysia since its inception in 1957.

“But even prior to that, our countries shared an enduring partnership. In fact, our trade relationship spans several centuries, and today, the ties between our two countries are as strong as ever and continue to deepen and expand.

“We work closely on trade, security, environmental conservation and health and educational and cultural cooperation.

“We look forward to continuing our important work, together as partners and friends for global, regional and bilateral peace and security,” she said.

The video includes images of previous prime ministers of the country and key Malaysian landmarks, such as the Memorial Pengisytiharan Kemerdekaan in Melaka, Dataran Merdeka and the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

The clip ends with Lakhdir standing in front of the Tugu Negara, accompanied by the embassy’s local staff members dressed in traditional garb wishing, “Selamat menyambut Hari Kebangsaan to our Malaysian friends. Selamat Hari Merdeka,” while waving the Jalur Gemilang.
