SHAH ALAM: A bus driver who ferried the Malaysia hockey contingent for the SEA Games has to serve 182 days' in jail after he failed to pay more than RM20,000 in fines.
Magistrate P. Sarulatha fined R. Krishnan a total of RM20,400 for 19 counts of traffic-related offences after he pleaded guilty to the charges on Thursday.
Sarulatha ordered him jailed if he failed to pay the fine.
Krishnan, 33, was fined between RM500 and RM1,500 for committing the 19 traffic offences from 2005 to 2016 in Shah Alam.
Krishnan, who was unrepresented, did not pay the fine and was taken to Kajang Prison.
He was charged with eight counts of not having a driving licence, four counts each for not possessing a valid road tax and insurance. He was also charged with three counts of not having a licence to drive a lorry.
All the charges came under the Road Transport Department Act 1987 (Act 333/1987).
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurulhuda Ramli urged the court to mete out a deterrent sentence to serve as a lesson to him and other road users.
She said that Krishnan was employed as the driver for the Malaysian hockey squad at the SEA Games but the offences he had committed were not related to the job at the Games.
In pleading for leniency, Krishnan said that he was working alone.
