16-year-old Muhammad Zairul Naim Zaini, from Kampung Paya Palas, Pendang, Alor Setar, was working at a hardware store to earn extra income, but fate was not on his side when he was crushed to death in the elevator while loading some mattresses.
“The lower part of the body was in the lift and the upper part was jutting out onto the ground floor,” said Kedah Fire and Rescue Department chief of operations and stations management branch, Mohd Firdaus Daud,
The elevator from the ground floor reportedly rose abruptly, leaving the victim’s body trapped between the two-storey shop and the ceiling, where his colleague found him in a motionless state.
The Fire and Rescue Department took 30 minutes to remove the victim’s body using power tools, before handing it over to the police for further investigation.
The victim’s father Zaini Saad, 45, said he almost fainted seeing the body of his eldest son.
“I was at home and at 3.30pm, my son’s colleague came over to tell me about the accident so I rushed to his workplace to find my son’s dead body. I felt weak looking at his state of death,” he told Bernama.
He described how he saw his son's left hand drooping, with bleeding wounds from his neck and down to his chest, while his face had scratch marks after being crushed in the elevator at his workplace.
“I walked out immediately to allow the firefighters to remove his remains before riding a police jeep to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB)," he added.
Zairul had been working since he was 15, in which his father described him to be an independent child. He had quit school after Form Two because he was not interested in learning, so he focused on work to help his family earn extra income.
"He has worked for seven months in Kuala Lumpur before coming back to the village to find a job. When he asked me to find him a job in the village, I helped him ... I thought it would not be a problem as he is working in a store.
"He got a placement here, and I did not expect fate would have it this way...but it's all fated," the father stated adding that the victim’s mother, Chik Saad, 40, is still grieving over her son’s death.
Remembering his late son, the father relayed to Harian Metro, "My son has never defied me and he is a very a obedient child. He has never been a trouble to the family."
The father last saw his son at 8.30am yesterday morning before he left to work.
Following the post-mortem, Zairul’s body will be buried at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Kuala Rimau, in Pendang.
