KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIC vice-president Tan Sri S. Balakrishnan was charged at the Sessions Court today with submitting false claims of nearly RM13mil to the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), while his son was charged with abetting him.

The duo however claimed trial to the offence separately before judges Allaudeen Ismail and Aliza Alwi, respectively.

The 63-year-old retired politician and his son Ashok Kumar, 31, were accused of having submitted the false claims that were related to river restoration works for the DID.

The offence was allegedly committed between April 27, 2012 and Oct 23, 2013.

The courts allowed them RM500,000 bail with two sureties each. Their case will be up for mention on Aug 28.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor S. Thangavelu prosecuted while the two accused were represented by counsel John Dass and Ashok Athimulan respectively
