KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — Tengku Mahkota Johor (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim today explained his decision to run for Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) presidency, saying he wants to stop it from being misused for political reasons.

“What made me U-turn, I am afraid that football falls into hands of people who would use it for political ambitions.

“I don’t want FAM to be used for political mileage. I don’t want FAM to be used as a financial hub to distribute money during a political campaign,” the Johor Crown Prince told the audience during a meeting with footballing fans at the Grand Hyatt today.

Tunku Ismail added that if he is FAM president there won’t be “favouritism and cronyism”, which he believes have plagued the football congress long enough.

“I want to work with people who put in the effort to make Malaysia football. I don’t want people to be there for their own agenda,” he stressed.

The Johor royalty, however, was concerned that parties might try and sabotage his bid for the FAM presidency.

“There will be some parties that will try to sabotage me. You know political people are very powerful, they have the sources, money and contacts,” Tunku Ismail said.

TMJ also said he has already explained his plans for FAM’s future to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and he has supported it.

“He understands my mission and vision. Obviously, he gave his support to my idea because he feels football needs a different flavour. He also is desperate to see a change in the national team,” Tunku Ismail said.
