Sarawak cops arrest man over false online news
MIRI: Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for posting fake claims of a rape-murder case on a Miri community Facebook page.
The youth was arrested at about midnight Wednesday, said Miri police chief Asst Comm Khoo Leng Huat.
"We have arrested him and are investigating him for posting fake news online which is an offence against the Multimedia and Communications Act.
"This is a warning to everyone not to spread false information," he said.
ACP Khoo said the police had carried out investigations into the claims posted which were widely circulated over the past 24 hours.
"Our investigation found the claims (of the rape-cum-murder) to be false," he said.
The report falsely claimed that a woman was raped and murdered behind a fast food restaurant near a housing estate about 2km outside the city centre on Tuesday night.
