ALOR SETAR: A state Public Works Department senior assistant engineer was charged in a Sessions Court with five counts of soliciting and receiving bribes totalling RM105,000 as inducement to help a contractor secure tree felling, road maintenance and upgrading projects in Sik last year.
Ishak Ismail, 56, of Sungai Daun Yan, who is based at the department’s Kuala Muda/Sik branch, claimed trial to the charges.
The offences carry a maximum jail term of 20 years, a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or a fine of RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Ishak is alleged to have solicited the sum from Nor Azman Hashim, 45, as an inducement to ensure that ZNZ Warisan Enterprise, Hash Padu Enterprise, Panji Mega Enterprise, Tanjak Perkasa Enterprise and Sri Nadiya Enterprise are awarded the projects.
The offences are alleged to have been committed between Aug 2 and Aug 14 last year at Central Square and in front of Park Avenue Hotel in Sungai Petani and via SMS.
Ishak also denied two charges of receiving the sum from Nor Azman at his (Ishak’s) house in Sungai Daun Yan on Aug 9 and Aug 18.
Deputy public prosecutor from the state MACC A. Hafiizh Abu Bakar requested RM50,000 bail but defence counsel Ram Karpal Singh asked for the bail to be reduced.
Sessions judge Zulhazmi Abdul-lah allowed bail of RM30,000 in one surety pending mention of the case on March 28. Ishak posted bail.
