MACC nabs PWD engineer over millions in kickbacks

THE STAR
PETALING JAYA: A senior assistant engineer is the latest person to be arrested for alleged corruption and abuse of power.

The civil servant, aged 56, is involved with projects in the Sik district in Kedah.
It is learnt that a team from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) nabbed him at his house in Kampung Sungai Daun, Alor Setar at about 11.30am on Wednesday.
The suspect is said to have amassed over RM3mil in kickbacks from several contractors over the past few years.
Among the projects in question under the state Public Works Department were for the maintenance and upgrading of roads in the Sik district which required consent from the suspect before work could proceed.
Newly-appointed MACC director of investigations Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani confirmed the arrest.
On Jan 4, the MACC arrested Rural and Regional Development secretary-general Datuk Mohd Arif Ab Rahman at his Subang Jaya house. The commission also seized cash and gold bars worth over RM6mil as well as titles to 10 plots of land.
Last week, four Selangor Immigration officers were nabbed for altering internal systems and records and using falsified information of people with disabilities to apply for international passports.
The MACC is also investigating a Malacca City Council official for allegedly soliciting kickbacks in exchange for approval of projects amounting to millions of ringgit.
