Liow: Uber and Grab to be regulated by driver's cards

KUALA LUMPUR: Taxis, Uber and Grab car drivers will soon operate under the same environment, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Liow said that additional regulations would be imposed on Uber and Grab car drivers, while taxis would undergo deregulation to allow them to compete with the new ride-sharing services.

"Uber and grab car divers will need to have a driver's card registered under the Road Transport Act, which is to regulate all public transportation drivers," he said after launching MCA's 10 Economic Strategic Directions conference held at Wisma MCA on Saturday.

Liow added that Uber and Grab car drivers would have to apply for the card from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

"I will leave it to SPAD to announce the details and the application process," he said.

Earlier this week, Cabinet decided that Uber and Grab car would be legalised in Malaysia.

A source from the Ministry also revealed that Uber and Grab car drivers will have to send their vehicles to Puspakom centres to verify if they are road-worthy.
