PETALING JAYA: Police have rubbished claims that a van that caught fire in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur on Monday was caused by explosives.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh said the van driver noticed smoke coming out from the engine compartment while he was driving and stopped the vehicle.

The fire spread from the engine to the whole van, destroying it. Firemen arrived at the scene at about 9am and put out the fire in 10 minutes.

No one was injured in the incident.

Comm Amar said the driver has lodged a report.

He said the van was not blown up by explosives as reported in social media that had gone viral.

He said police were looking into the spread of such false news and action can be taken under the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“Police will investigate the source of this fake news,” he said.
