Four students hit by delivery truck in Manila

Four students, who walked on the sidewalk in Manila, were injured when a raging truck reportedly lost control Friday morning, police said.

PO2 John Mark Estrada, case investigator, said all victims fortunately sustained minor injuries but are still under investigation.

The victims were identified as Micah Francisco, 18, of Quezon City; Eva Pareja, 19, of Taytay, Rizal; Daphine Lucero, 18, of Quezon City; and Klarence Ocampo, 18, of Quezon City.

Estrada said that among the victims, Ocampo was most hurt sustaining a fracture on the right arm.

Initial investigation of the Manila Police District’s traffic enforcement unit disclosed that at 11:50 a.m. the delivery truck loaded with hollow blocks and sand was traversing along Nepomuceno Street in Quiapo when the driver, who remained unidentified, reportedly lost control of the vehicle’s brake and rammed into the students walking by the sidewalk in Concepcion Aguila Street.

It was disclosed that the suspect reportedly went out of the vehicle to help the victims but when bystanders started aiding, he escaped leaving the truck with plate number WAP 148 on the scene.

Ocampo was later brought to the Jose Reyes Hospital while the three other victims were rushed to a hospital in Sampaloc, Manila.

Estrada said that according to a witness named Lea Acopan the truck was trying to overtake a jeepney before hitting the victims.

The victims, who were clad in their school uniforms, were seen crossing the Concepcion Aguila Street going to a shaded part of the sidewalk when the speeding truck rammed into the students coming from the other side of the road.

However, Estrada said they are now trying to identify the suspect by coordinating with the company the suspect is working for.

Estrada also noted that an investigation to determine the real cause of the road accident is now underway.
