4 Famous Nasi Lemak You Must Try in Shah Alam by Hungrygowhere
Nasi lemak is such a classically Malaysian dish that is no question why people travel far and wide for it. Lining up for the nostalgic prices of 50 sen nasi lemak in Cheras, experimenting with nasi lemak in gelato, pizza, or sushi form, sometimes you just want the classic offerings, and here are some of the best for those who happen to be in Shah Alam.
Nasi Lemak Cinta Sayang
Love is all you need, and the nasi lemak here at Nasi Lemak Cinta Sayang is full of it, readily available 24 hours a day in Seksyen 13 Shah Alam. No need to wake up early all the time for your daily dose of nasi lemak loving, it’ll be patiently waiting for you till the wee hours of the night!
The restaurant here hugs the edge of its row, occupying a large corner lot with both indoor and outdoor al fresco seating.
That’s a lot of cinta sayang
With more than 20 kinds of dishes available, you will be spoilt for choice, now that’s what you might call a big kindness. Of course love ain’t cheap, luckily the platters here are still considered affordable. We paid RM7.50 for our mouth-watering combination of coconut rice, fried chicken, begedil, sambal, and fried egg. We will gladly pay that much again here.
Love is patient, love is kind
Now that’s done, let’s focus on how it tastes. The sambal here is more savoury than sweet, with a pleasant heat that didn’t go as far as to burn our tastebuds off. The rice was fluffy and tasted of creamy coconut, each mouthful a pillow of satisfaction. Don’t be shy and ladle as much as you want from the line onto your platter.
A lovely meal of a beloved dish that we loved!

Restoran Ceria
A low-hanging awning outlines the shoplot, creating an impressive spread of shade for diners to enjoy. It’s not all just for looks though, as the shop gets a rather brutal dosing of sun at inopportune times during the day, something the awning solves easily.
Watch your head!
The staff here was friendly, quickly but happily fixing up plate after plate of steaming nasi lemak. Cheerful smells and smiles accompanied our journey down the line of dishes, tickling our appetites into rumbling our bellies.
Colourful, cheerful things to pair with rice!
With one bite, we KL-ite nasi lemak lovers could see why regulars swear that this spot is the best in Shah Alam.
We couldn’t get enough of the sambal for one. Sweet with a biting spice, we couldn’t get enough of it, polishing off each dollop with spoonfuls of creamy rice. Later, we could still feel it on the tip our tongues, teasing us for the next half hour, tempting us to go back and get another plate.
The chicken was also amazing, juicy and flavourful inside while maintaining a savoury, crisp outer batter. We like to think our in-house recipe for it is pretty good, but this place just blew our own efforts in the kitchen out of the water!
The batter simply melts in your mouth and crunches under your teeth

Restoran Gembira
Open since the days of 1968, it’s not a long way off from Ceria. In fact, most people face the dilemma of which team to side on, Gembira and Ceria. As you can tell, they’re not too far apart in all respects.
Old school Malay food
No awning here, but our meal was accompanied by guests of cats and a curious child, not rowdy enough to interrupt the meal, but often enough to provide the occasional tableside entertainment. It’s a simple store, no frills or fancies here, but comes with a comfortable interior, great selection of sides, and well-priced plates of nasi lemak (RM5.)
Hues of scarlet and spices that prickle the nose
We did like the rice more here, and some may prefer the savoury sambal of Ceria when compared to the sweeter notes of the sambal from Gembira. However, the chicken at Gembira did win out, each bite of it just that much more satisfying and juicy, especially when coupled with the satisfying crunching of the usual nut and ikan bilis (anchovies) mixture.
Look at how thick that sambal is!

Warung Nasi Lemak Pak Ayob
Off in Seksyen 20 of Shah Alam, list Warung Nasi Lemak Pak Ayob. A warung that has slid open it’s shutters for 20 years in all practicality, without requiring the catchy names of emotions like the other shops we’ve covered.
This is one of the few restaurants in the area that closes up between lunch and dinner so that they can adequately cater for both meal rushes.
It's not as happy as the other stores, but it's great food!
We showed up just before lunchtime ended unfortunately, and though we successfully avoided having to battle for a table, we were left with nasi lemak kosong (RM3). Which in it’s defense, was not as lonely as it sounds, coming with a large portion of rice, sambal, fried egg, and sambal petai.
This unassuming serving was also very rich with coconut milk, and the sambal was extra spicy regardless of the stinky beans. This really made it clear that side dishes are not always the best part of a good nasi lemak, even the non-halal ones! All in all, not a bad RM3 spent, especially as a takeaway option.
Don't complicate things, go with a classy nasi lemak!
Make sure you time your visit right, and visit it at night at least once! That’s when a nearby satay stall opens up, pimping each bungkus(packet) of nasi lemak further with an extra boost of meaty protein goodness!
