KOTA KINABALU: Two anti-narcotics officers were shot apparently by a sniper while they were arresting a suspected drug pusher at a roundabout around the Jalan Sepanggar-Salut road here.
Sjn Mejar Sabturani Maul suffered wounds on his head and Kons Tong Wilson was hit on the head, nose and body from pellets from a single shot of a homemade gun which was fired from hill near the Salut Commercial Centre at about 2pm Thursday.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said both policemen were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2.
He said a massive hunt was underway for the suspect or suspects who were hiding in the hillside where the gunshot came from.
Jalaluddin said a team from the anti-narcotics unit led by Insp Siri Piuh was carrying out operations at the roundabout close to the centre.
The team spotted two suspicious looking men and approached them.
"As soon as police identified themselves, the two men tried to escape which led to a struggle and one of the suspects arrested while the other escaped towards the hill,’’ he said.
"As they were checking the suspect, there was an explosion believed from a homemade shotgun,’’ he said. The pellets hit the two detectives from Kepayan state police headquarters.
"We believe the shot came from the nearby hill,’’ he said, adding that it could have been from the man who escaped or other accomplices in the area.
The man who was arrested claimed to be 'Malik Bin Hasdari' an ethnic Bajau but did not have any documents.
Police recovered two plastic packets containing suspected syabu in his pants pocket.
