TANAH MERAH: Several twisters descended here on Tuesday, causing chaos and property damage in certain areas around the district.
District Fire and Rescue Department chief Hanaffi Mohd said the twisters touched down at about 4pm and ripped off zinc roofs from several structures, flinging them into the air.
He added there had been no reports of injuries or death cause by the twisters, which he said were "very strong".
"It lasted nearly 30 minutes ... prior to this we had storms and strong winds, but not enough to damage houses.
"A fire truck with six firemen was sent to the affected areas especially at SMK Tanah Merah, which suffered damage to its roof," he said when contacted here on Wednesday.
Hanaffi added that the damage caused was "massive", but he was unable to ascertain its extent.
Mustapha Awang Kechik, 70, a resident of Jalan Taman Adabi here, said his house was badly damaged when the twisters hit his home.
"Last year, my house was damaged by floods and my house caught fire in March. Now it has been damaged by the twister," he said.
Shariff Mohamad, 44, said his restaurant was badly damaged by the twister.
"The winds were strong and ripped off the roof of my restaurant, If the foundation wasn't strong enough, I could have died," he exclaimed.
