BARCELONA: Samsung has unveiled its new flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, which feature new frames made of aerospace alloy and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back of the devices.
The smartphones were codenamed Project Zero because the South Korean giant wanted to redesign the devices from the ground up by getting back to the fundamentals.
The vice-president of Online at Samsung Mobile, David Kang, said the designers had to create a new moulding technique to produce the curved glass required for the new smartphones.
While the S6 and S6 Edge share the same hardware specifications, the S6 Edge has a more radical design, with a display that is curved on both sides.
The curved edge of the S6 Edge display can be used to view app shortcuts, widgets and notifications.
One feature of the S6 Edge is that the user can assign specific colours to particular callers, even when the smartphone is in silent mode and placed facing downwards.
The curved edge, which will still be visible, will flash the corresponding colour when receiving a call.
Calls can be dismissed by putting a finger on the heart rate sensor on the back of the smartphone.
Both devices also feature the world’s highest resolution 5.1-inch Quad HD Super Amoled screens.
They also feature a new 64-bit Samsung Octa-core Exynos processor, which the company claims is the first processor for smartphones to be built on the 14nm process.
The smartphones come with a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilisation and a 5-megapixel front-facing came.ra
