KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia gained promotion to the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group II for the first time since 2010.
The top seeds whipped Turkmenistan 2-0 in the Group III semi-finals at the National Tennis Complex in Jalan Duta on Saturday.
Mohd Assri Merzuki fought back to edge Georgiy Pochay 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to give Malaysia the opening point.
Syed Mohd Agil Syed Naguib then sealed victory for Malaysia by overcoming Isa Mammetgulyyev 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
“The whole team is very proud to finally achieve the promotion target,” said the 21-year-old Syed Agil.
Vietnam earned the other promotion spot by beating Hong Kong 2-0 in the other semi-final.
As Malaysia and Vietnam have confirmed their places in Group II, the final will not be contested.
