KUALA LUMPUR, March 28, 2015:
(UPDATED 6.45pm) Protesters have dispersed, with no untoward incidents reported as yet.
(6.10pm) After negotiation, the police allowed the protesters to be in the area for 45 minutes, however they were not allowed to cross the barricade to get near KLCC.
(6.00pm) Police placed barricades in front of Public Bank building situated opposite KLCC to prevent KitaLawan rally participants from heading to KLCC.
The crowd then made it a point to stop for a while in front of the Dang Wangi district police station. They shouted for the release of those detained under the Sedition Act. The police looked on but did not react as the crowd ‘waved’ at them for at least several minutes in front of the police station.
The police inaction, except in trying to coordinate traffic, appeared to embolden the protesters. Onlookers from cars and buses looked on with curiosity at the large crowd and frustration at the traffic standstill.
(5.00pm) The KitaLawan rally today saw a rather large turnout compared to its usual weekly protest outside the Sogo Shopping Centre with more than 700 participants gathering here before moving to their next location.
Among Opposition leaders and activists present are PAS’ Khalid Samad, PKR Youth vice chief Dr Afif Bahardin, National Laureate Datuk A Samad Said, Bersih Chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, Jingga 13 leader Fariz Musa and activist Mandeep Singh.
The participants of the rally are currently gathering in front of Sogo before heading to KLCC to ‘celebrate’ the wedding reception of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s daughter Nooryana Najwa.
Earlier, protesters walked from Masjid Jamek checkpoint to Dataran Merdeka before a few other groups gathered there to continue marching to Sogo.
While marching, they were shouting sentiments such as “Tolak GST”, “Undur IGP” and “Bebas Anwar” aside from singing a parody version of “Selamat Pengantin Baru” dedicated to Nooryana.
Fariz Musa during his speech here claimed that the reason Najib was holding his daughter’s wedding this month was because the Prime Minister wanted to avoid the goods and services tax (GST) set to be implemented April 1.
“We have a wedding to attend today. Why is he holding the wedding now? Because next week GST will be implemented,” shouted Fariz.
Meanwhile Afif in his speech said the reason he joined the rally today is to demand for a better future for the public.
“This is our rights as Malaysians to gather. Nobody can deny us our rights. We are gathering because we don’t want GST, we are worried with the country’s debt, we want to fight against corruption and a racist government,” claimed Afif.
(3.00pm) Earlier, a small turnout of less than 40 participants gathered at the Masjid Jamek checkpoint at before they proceeded to walk towards Sogo along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here.
The Masjid Jamek checkpoint was headed by Fariz, who shouted slogans such as “Bebas Anwar”, “Undur Najib” and “Tolak GST”.
On the way to Sogo, they stopped at Dataran Merdeka, where they were joined by some 300 people.
Meanwhile, at the Dataran Merdeka checkpoint earlier, participants slowly joined in the gathering, which started out with less than 100 people.
The Dataran Merdeka checkpoint was led by PKR’s Bakar Arang assemblyman Simon Ooi.
The crowd, dressed mostly in black, chanted reformasi and anti-GST slogans, while calling for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to resign.
There was momentary chaos as the crowd, walking from Masjid Jamek, attempted to cross the street near Dataran Merdeka, forcing the traffic to come to a standstill.
A carnival atmosphere soon descended as protesters blasted away with their horns, while some even brought along drums and some protesters started to sing.
The KitaLawan rally has been held every Saturday at the same place ever since Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was imprisoned after being convicted of sodomy.
Today, the aim of the rally remains the same, although the organisers have added on several other agendas, among them calling for the IGP to resign, as well as to stop the implementation of the GST.
It was reported that the protesters might gatecrash the wedding reception of Najib’s daughter taking place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
However, Fariz had responded to the claims by saying that they were not going to gatecrash, but just wanted to ‘celebrate’ the wedding as well.
In what would appear as a reference to the wedding set to take place today, some participants were seen holding gifts and the traditional Malay wedding decoration bunga manggar, and some are even singing the famous Selamat Pengantin Baru song, which includes made-up lyrics.
Activist Mandeep Singh, during his speech in front of the Dataran Merdeka checkpoint, told the participants to not start any provocation.
“Please do not start any provocation with the police or anyone. Don’t give them a reason to make more arrests.”
