Cops on patrol stumble on Turkish terror suspect

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — It was a routine crime prevention patrol, but two police officers ended up nabbing a Turkish national who had a mobile phone which contained a “guide” on making bombs.
The photo on the man’s phone also had the words “Al-Qaeda Inspire Magazine”.
Wangsa Maju district police chief Supt Nor Azman Yusof said a constable and a lance corporal attached to the Wangsa Maju police station were patrolling Jalan Taman Melati Utama, in front of the Taman Melati secondary school, at 11am last Tuesday.
“A man, who looked like a foreigner, and was walking nearby, bolted as soon as he saw the two policemen, which prompted a chase,” Nor Azman said yesterday, adding that the 30-year-old man was later identified as a Turkish national.
“He was caught at the playground opposite the PV5 condominium nearby minutes later and brought to the Wangsa Maju station.”
It is learnt that the suspect did not have a passport. Checks on his phone revealed a picture depicting steps in making a bomb.
Police then went to the suspect’s house and detained two of his housemates, who are also from Turkey.
It is learnt that the duo had passports, although police believe they were fake.
The trio are not conversant in Malay or English, thus the investigating officer has been tasked with finding a translator to assist in investigations.
Nor Azman declined to elaborate as he said the investigation on the Turkish trio had been taken over by the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters and could be a “classified probe”.
It has been six days since the arrests, but calls and messages to Bukit Aman have led to “decline to comment” responses with police sources saying it was a coincidental arrest.
“They were arrested by Wangsa Maju police, not by our team. It was a coincidence, we cannot comment,” said one of the sources.
There have been arrests in recent weeks with suspects believed to be linked to terror activities, with the latest having alleged links to the recent twin blasts at the Chennai Central Railway Station and the planned attacks on two foreign consulates in South India.
