KUALA LUMPUR: THREE men and a woman were yesterday charged with offences related to terrorism, as the nation's top cop said police were aware of several militants hiding in the country.
The four were charged in courts here, Taiping and Port Dickson, with promoting acts of terrorism in Syria.
At the magistrate's court here, housewife Azizah Md Yusof, 55, was charged with supporting terrorism via two Facebook pages last month.
Clad in a faded red T-shirt in the packed courtroom, she said she understood when read the two counts of using Facebook pages "Wan Jah" and "Azizah Yusof" to support terrorist activities.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad urged the court to set an early mention date to expedite the transfer of the case to the High Court.
Magistrate Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin denied bail and fixed May 30 for mention.
Counsels Nadzarin Wok Nordin and K.C. Suzalena Salleh appeared for Azizah.
Azizah was seen talking to family members after leaving the court.
In Taiping, two men were brought before the magistrate's court.
Muhammad Armie Fatihah Mohd Hashim, 22, was accused of encouraging violence with the intention of promoting an ideology from April 4 to 6 between 10am and 12.30pm at Kampung Sungai Jernih, Ijok.
On the same date, time and venue, Mohammad Hafiz Zahri Suparyatnoh, 28, was accused of supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syam (ISIS), a terrorist group.
Armie Fatihah faces a jail term of up to 30 years and fine while Hafiz Zahri faces life imprisonment or a jail term of not more than 30 years or fine.
No pleas were recorded from the duo, who were unrepresented.
When the charges were read to them in front of magistrate Eyu Ghim Siang, both said they understood.
Deputy public prosecutor Shukor Abu Bakar, who did not offer bail for the duo, said the charges were related to investigations under Section 12 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, or Sosma, which is required to be heard by a High Court judge.
"I apply to set a new mention date pending appointment of lawyers by the two accused," he said.
Eyu fixed May 30 for mention.
In Port Dickson, Mohd Khairil Mi, 27, was charged with promoting acts of terrorism in Syria in November last year.
He nodded in acknowledgement when read the charge.
No plea was recorded before magistrate M. Mageshwary.
Khairil was charged with committing the offence at No. 36 Jalan 1/12, Taman Intan Perdana, here at 3pm on Nov 3 last year.
Mageshwary set mention of the case for June 4 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
After the proceedings, the accused was seen hugging his wife. They whispered to each other and wept before he was taken to Kajang Prison pending trial.
The four were among 11 detained recently under Sosma for alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities.
The others are being investigated while some may be released.
In George Town, Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, said police knew where other fugitive militants in the country were hiding.
Khalid said the police were monitoring the militants' recruitment drives targeting youths in the country.
"I cannot tell you much as I do not want to hamper investigations. We are on top of things and the suspected militants are under constant watch."
