Single mother sent to gallows for drug trafficking

ALOR SETAR: A 43-year-old single mother, who is HIV positive was given the death sentence after the High Court here found her guilty of trafficking in more than 1.1kg of drugs in 2012.
Bunyuen Promjeen, from Chiang Rai, Thailand, appeared calm when the judgement was pronounced.
She was convicted of trafficking in 1,119.7gm of methamphetamine at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration Complex at 12pm on Oct 8, 2012.
The offence under the Section 39B(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
udicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
He describes Bunyuen's testimony as improbable.
"The accused said that the bag which contains the drug was borrowed from a friend but in the end, I find that the accused has knowledge and custody of the drugs," he said.
In mitigation, the defence counsel Ai Cha Ran pleaded for the court to allow the accused to see her two children before her death sentence.
To which Mohd Zaki replied that it is not under the court's jurisdiction to allow the accused to meet her children.
