Curious crime: Police officers looking for evidence in the stolen Honda CRV along Jalan Watson in Ipoh.
IPOH: Car thieves who had stolen a car belonging to a businessman’s family here on Thursday, brought the car back to his house and drove away in his prized Bentley.
The RM1.2mil luxury car, however, was recovered hours later in Menglembu, just 30 minutes’ drive from the family bungalow in Jalan Watson, yesterday.
The police also arrested a man believed to be part of a car theft gang.
The businessman’s son had reported that his Honda CRV had been stolen in Gunung Rapat, some 15 minutes drive from the house.
It was abandoned outside the bungalow when the thieves targeted the more expensive Bentley at around 4am yesterday.
The owner, a “Datuk Seri”, fired three shots to frighten off the thief who broke into his bungalow in an affluent part of the city to steal the luxury car.
In his haste to escape, the suspect rammed the Bentley through the gate.
At the same time, another man, believed to be an accomplice of the robber, was seen scrambling over the perimeter wall of the house.
It is learnt that the owner of the British-made luxury automobile has other cars but they were apparently not of interest to the thief who had sneaked into the house to get the keys of the Bentley. Nothing else was taken.
On checking the abandoned Honda CRV, police found a pair of jeans, underwear and socks.
“It’s a gang-related activity. We are looking for other members of the gang,” Ipoh deputy OCPD (I) Supt Anuar Othman said, when contacted at around 6.25pm.
He said the owner had first heard noises from the ground floor of the house and had quietly gone down to check what was happening.
“He saw a stranger in the living room and silently followed the suspect who went out to the porch and got into the Bentley,” said Supt Anuar, adding that the man’s accomplice waited nearby.
“While starting the engine, the suspect noticed the owner and tried to ram him.
The owner fired three warning shots in the air, prompting the suspect to make his escape by crashing through the gate while his accomplice got away by climbing over the perimeter wall.
