Since Ops Cantas Khas Started - Selangor Police have detained 4,797 people.

SHAH ALAM -- Police have detained 4,797 individuals in the special Ops Cantas conducted since Aug 17 in Selangor and seized 593 items including guns, burglary tools, drugs and vehicles.

Selangor police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said as of yesterday RM1,543 in cash was also seized from several of the detained suspects.  

"On the whole 16,112 people were checked at 337 targeted locations such as entertainment outlets, hot spots, private premises and vice dens throughout Selangor.
"Road blocks were also carried out everyday during the month-long operation," he told a press conference at the state police head quarter's media centre here today.  
He said the detainees were between 17 and 40, with the majority of them in their 20s. They were involved in car thefts, robberies, drug abuse, secret society activities and some of them were on the wanted list, he added.  
Mohd Shukri noted that among those detained were 49 members from Gang 08, Gang 36 (22), Gang 18 (14), Gang 24 (10) and four members each of Gang Satu Hati and Gang 04.   

He added that 20 of the cases have been approved for prosecution by the Attorney-General's Office and 102 more would follow suit.   
He described the operation as a success as it managed to reduce Selangor's crime index by 2.81 percent which was 90 cases involving violence and property.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police detained 18 individuals during the same operation in the last 24 hours.
In a statement here today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said: "They are suspected of rioting, assault, possessing stolen goods, criminal intimidation, escaping from drug rehabilitation centres and gang robbery."   -- BERNAMA
