Woman wants cops to admit they shot her wrongfully
KUALA LUMPUR: A Judge has asked the parties involved in the civil dispute filed by a woman who survived after being shot in the lung by the police to settle the matter.
Norizan Salleh, 33, who is now pregnant, has claimed that she did not commit any crime, which would have justified the police firing at her while she was travelling in her friend's car.
Her lead counsel N.Surendran told the media Thursday that the housewife would agree to settle the claim if there was an admission on liability.
"It is not about money. She wants them (police) to admit that the shooting was wrongful," he said.
He said if no agreement could be reached by the parties, Norizan would testify in court on Friday at 10.30am before High Court judge Justice Hue Siew Kheng.
"She is claiming for assault and battery. She is seeking for RM18,326 for IJN (National Heart Institute) medical bills, including for having to remove part of her lung due to the shooting," he said.
Norizan filed the suit on Oct 15 last year, seeking damages from the Inspector-General of Police and the Government over the shooting incident.
Norizan, who was then a single mother, also named Mohd Firdaus, the officer who allegedly shot her and the Sentul police chief as defendants.
In her statement of claim, Norizan said at 4am on Oct 30 2010, a police patrol approached the car in which she was a passenger and Mohd Firdaus suddenly opened fire, injuring her wrist, arm and chest.
When her car stopped, she tried to get out but was kicked back into the car by Mohd Firdaus, who later he stepped on her when she crawled out of the vehicle, she said.
She was taken to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, where she underwent surgery.
Norizan said she also had surgery at the IJN, where a bullet was removed from her lung.
