WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump "declared war" on paper straws and wants to restore the use of plastic, reports the German News Agency (dpa).
On Monday, Trump signed an order directing US government departments and agencies to no longer acquire or use paper straws in the future.
His team is also tasked with formulating a national strategy to end the use of paper straws, as well as abolishing guidelines that are detrimental to the use of plastic straws. "This item immediately did not work. If used for hot drinks, it does not last long, sometimes only a few minutes, and some even only last a few seconds.
"This situation doesn't make sense, so we're going to go back to plastic straws. I think that's okay," he said.
Single-use plastic items such as drinking cups, cutlery, and straws are considered harmful to the environment because most of them end up in the ocean.
In comparison, the European Union has banned the sale of plastic straws since mid-2021.
According to United Nations (UN) data, a total of 9.2 billion tons of plastic have been produced since the 1950s -- the equivalent of the weight of about 910,000 Eiffel Towers.
Most of it cannot decompose naturally and ends up as landfill waste or polluting the ocean.
