WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has come under fire after using a modified quote attributed to the self-crowned French emperor, Napoleon, as if to give the impression that he was above the law, the German news agency (dpa) reported.

"A person who saves his country is not breaking the law," Trump said in a post on platform X on Saturday.

Trump's remarks sparked a backlash from Democrats, with Senator Adam Schiff of California replying: "Words like a real dictator." U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance echoed Trump's tone in early February when he claimed that "judges cannot control the legal power of the executive."

Trump, who is serving a second term as US president for more than three weeks, has faced criticism over his style of administration.

Critics accuse him of not adhering to democratic principles, including declaring himself president of cultural institutions such as the Kennedy Center.

His appointment of tech billionaire Elon Musk to government office also sparked protests, with several states filing lawsuits alleging that it gave "uncontrolled legal powers" to the Tesla chief executive without Congressional approval.

The lawsuit, filed by several states including New Mexico and California, is among many lawsuits facing the Trump administration, with various parties accusing the president of breaking the law through several decrees he issued.

So far, the judge has temporarily suspended at least 12 decisions from the White House.

Napoleon, who died in exile in 1821 on the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean, is still a divisive figure in French opinion today. Some see him as a reformist and founder of an important institution, while others see him as an authoritarian ruler.
