PUTRAJAYA: The appointment of Malaysia as President of the Assembly of Parties (AoP) of the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) is a great honor for the country and proves the seriousness of the MADANI Government in its efforts to combat corruption at the global level.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Legal and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the appointment was also the recognition and trust of the international community towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's unwavering commitment and his firm stance on the issue of corruption, a fact that is well known. all over the world.

"This appointment not only gives Malaysia space to show its commitment and national leadership in efforts to prevent corruption at the international level, but also a trust to bring more meaningful changes in the global effort to fight corruption," he said in a statement issued by the Department's Legal Affairs Division. Azalina was appointed President of the IACA AoP for the 13th session of the AoP assembly held at the Vienna International Center, Vienna today.

Meanwhile, BHEUU, JPM in the same statement informed that the historic appointment is the first time Malaysia has been entrusted to hold the highest position in the IACA AoP, a major platform for global capacity development in the prevention of corruption.

As president, Azalina will lead the AoP Bureau as well as the IACA membership consisting of 77 countries and four international organizations in the formation of IACA policies and strategies to strengthen the role of the academy in the field of professional anti-corruption education and training.

Since the first session of the IACA AoP which took place in 2012, Malaysia has only been elected as vice president in four meeting sessions, namely in the sessions of 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2023.







According to the statement, the recognition of IACA to Malaysia complements various anti-corruption initiatives that have been and are being implemented including the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024-2028, which aims to fight corruption and promote integrity, transparency and accountability in various sectors.

"This also includes a number of initiatives actively carried out by BHEUU, JPM including legal reforms to improve governance through the drafting of the Freedom of Information Bill, amendments to the Whistleblower Protection Act, and updates to the Trustee Act.

"Malaysia is confident that the trust of international bodies such as IACA will drive Malaysia to become a corruption-free country, with the target of ranking in the top 25 countries under Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) within the next 10 years will become a reality," according to the statement.

The statement also informed that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki was also reappointed as a member of the Board of Governors (BoG) of IACA for the 2024-2027 session.

According to the statement, Azam's role in the BoG will give Malaysia an advantage in setting the direction of IACA and ensuring that a more effective corruption prevention agenda can be achieved.

"Indirectly, this appointment also helps strengthen the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy as a reputable anti-corruption training center in the Asia Pacific region," according to the statement.

Since the IACA was established in 2011 in Austria, it has acted as an international center of excellence and research for anti-corruption and has become the main training center for professional groups, especially among anti-corruption agencies.
