LATEST UPDATE: The man who set himself on fire died after succumbing to the injuries last nigh
KANGAR: A man who was upset that girlfriend has a new lover is believed to have set himself and his car on fire in an incident in Kampung Syed Omar, Bintong here on 16 th February 2022.
The incident happened at about 8.40 pm, the 28-year-old victim was also reported to have 96 percent burns on his body.
Kangar District Police Chief, Superintendent Wari Kiew said, the investigation found that the incident took place on the bridge in Kampung Syed Omar and the victim was an owner of a vehicle accessories shop.
"A witness on the way home stopped his car behind the victim's burning car and found the man walking towards him.
"The witness then got out of the car and tried to calm the victim before contacting the police, fire and ambulance," he said in a statement here today.
He added that the fire was successfully extinguished shortly before the victim was sent to Tengku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) for further treatment.
He said further investigation found that the victim was an outpatient of the HTF Psychiatric Department and had a record of several suicide attempts, including slashing his hands in January and drinking rat poison the day before the incident.
“The victim's father wanted to lodge a police report after his son drank petrol and left the house in a blue Perodua Axia car to cut the grass at his grandfather's house in Kaki Bukit at about 8.45pm.
"As soon as he arrived at the Kangar police station, the police informed that they found a burning car before he went to the location and confirmed that the burning car belonged to his son," he explained.
In the same development, Wari said, the victim was in a critical condition and was given respiratory assistance in the red zone of the HTF Emergency and Trauma Department after burning 96 percent of his limbs.
He said the Perlis Fire and Rescue Forensics will be present to visit the scene to detect the cause of the fire.
The case is being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide
