More CCTV cameras will be installed at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa to deter vandals, like those who defaced the park within hours of its reopening on Sunday (Dec 15).

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan (pic) said the cameras will be ready next year.

“The soft launch of the park - which is 95% completed - is for the public to relax and enjoy the beauty of Kuala Lumpur but some of them had defaced the facilities and littered at the park.

“We have about 28 enforcement officers on duty and an Act to punish wrongdoers but I was hoping to go on a softer approach where we organise civic-awareness programmes.

“For example, we partnered with Kuala Lumpur Education Department to educate the younger generations and engage with the homeless on how to keep the park clean.

“We also hope to reduce the number of rubbish bins so people are aware and would keep their rubbish before throwing it off elsewhere,” he said after presenting the Kuala Lumpur City Hall budget 2020.

On Sunday, vandals and litterbugs had spoiled the park within five hours after it was opened to the public.

Rubbish was thrown indiscriminately while words were scratched into concrete signage.

Those who are guilty of vandalising the park is liable to a fine not exceeding RM2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding a year, or both fine and imprisonment under the Parks (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-Laws 2012 and Vandalism (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) By-Laws 1991.

Nor Hisham hope such an approach would help in inculcating “smart” citizens who take care of the park.

“We feel that Kuala Lumpur can be a great and smart city, but with smart people, this vision would easily be achieved,” he said.
