JOHOR BARU: The state police will return the money and jewellery seized from a man who was arrested years ago after some technical matters are sorted out.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the delay in returning the man’s personal belongings was due to technical issues.

He said police had just received a letter from the DPP asking the police to return the belongings of M. Santhosa Singam, 50.

“The investigation officer in charge of the case was just transferred.

“But I have given specific instructions to the new officer to immediately process the necessary paperwork, and the items will be returned to him in two weeks,” he said here yesterday.

Comm Mohd Khalil was commenting on an appeal by Santhosa Singam to police to return his belongings, including cash amounting to almost RM300,000 and jewellery following his arrest some three years ago.

Santhosa Singam, 50, a retired teacher, said he and his adopted sister were arrested by the police in October 2016 for allegedly being involved in illegal moneylending activity. They were detained for five days.

“Some police officers came to my house and seized RM90,000 and jewellery kept in a safe. They also took RM50,000 and another S$43,000 (RM130,580) from my bank as evidence,” he claimed.

Santhosa Singam said a police officer then asked him to sign two documents which listed all the items that were seized.

He said his innocence was proven on Dec 10, 2017, when the Sessions Court acquitted him without discharge in the case.

Santhosa Singam added that following his release, he had been asking the police to return his belongings
