Two charged with various offences related to riots at Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25

PETALING JAYA: Two men were charged in the magistrate’s court here with various offences connected to the riots at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25 in November last year.

However, both lorry driver M. Chandran, 32, and jobless man A. Janagan, 33, claimed trial to the charges against them.

Chandran claimed trial to two charges before magistrate Nurshahirah Abdul Salim.

In the first charge, Chandran was accused, with two others previously charged, of obstructing several civil servants, namely policemen Inspector Mohd Nazmi Zulkafli, Sergeant Mohamad Faiz Abdul Rahim and Corporal Ahmad Zamran Mat, from carrying out their duties.

In the second charge, he was accused of, together with 50 others already charged and several others still at large, rioting by forcefully obstructing police patrol cars from leaving the temple area.

The two offences were alleged to have taken place in front of the temple at 1.30pm on Nov 26.

The charges were made under sections 186 and 147 of the Penal Code, respectively.

The first offence carries a maximum prison term of two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction, while the second carries a similar maximum jail term, or a fine or both.© Provided by Media Prima Two men were charged in the magistrate’s court here with various offences connected to the riots at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25 in November last year.

Nurshahirah allowed bail at RM3,000 with one surety for both charges.

Meanwhile, Janagan was produced before magistrate Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir where he was charged with committing mischief by damaging a vehicle parked in front of the temple at 4.30am on Nov 25.

According to the charge, Janagan and several others still at large had damaged a Nissan Navara bearing the registration plate WVS 3776, belonging to a company named Modular Construction.

He was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code which carries a maximumjail sentence of a year or fine or both upon conviction.

Ikhwan set bail at RM2,500 with one surety and ordered him to report to a police station twice a month.

Both cases are set for remention on Feb 15.

Prosecuting were deputy public prosecutors Mary Phoon Keat Mee and Nor Baizura Mohd Saubian, while both accused were represented by R. Balamurali.
